How To Grow As A Crochet Designer
Hello there! Wanted to share a few insights as I personally journey, venturing into world of Crochet Designing.
Being a Creator is so truly fulfilling & it's also lots of work. There are numerous expectations that have to be considered, such as the ideas themselves, time frames, and resources. Managing it all can be a struggle, though I've acquired some tricks to the that have helped me navigate this crafty world.
Inspiration isn't quite something that I have encounter. In fact, I have the exact opposite problem. I have so many ideas that it can be hard to know where to begin. I'll see someone wearing a cute top or cool jean jacket & a hundred new style ideas will come flying into my mind. How I can change it up or what I would wear with it? These are the questions that lead to the results that I want.
The problem is knowing what projects to do next. Sometimes a company is expecting an original creative concept from me, or I have custom orders to send out, or I have a new fashion idea I want to experiment with. It takes skill to balance it all & it's a continuous learning process. This is where prioritization comes into effect. My most important obligations come first, but I never take my eyes off those fun passion projects.
I'm quite obsessed with yarn (if you haven't noticed) & I'm always running to fabric stores or ordering online to find exactly what I need. I have to account for quantity, the length needed, the size of the crochet hook,, as well as, other materials such as scissors, appliques, needles, & sewing thread. Itemizing all of this is a great visual way to ensure you're not missing anything. Trust me, it happens.
I try my hardest to stick to time frames & I've done it enough to have a general idea of how it's going to go. It's not an exact science, and sometimes things don't go my way because I'm only human. I give myself a cushion to foster flexibility. For example, I'll estimate something a project will take a little longer as a precaution. I care more about ensuring that the item is completed &just the way I want it rather than working to beat the clock.
Designing for yourself has to remain important because that's the whole purpose of this art form. Nothing beats creating from a place of pure imagination. No matter how busy I get, I try not to lose sight of the excitement of just having fun with it. That's what energizes me to get all the other stuff done!
