How to Transition Into Fall Fashion
The changing of the seasons can be a difficult time to navigate when it comes to fashion. The weather can be unaccommodating to the change, which can influence your style compass. You might be ready to put on those scarves and sweaters, but the heat might say other ways. I’ve had a hard time with this in the past, and I’ve come up with a few tips to help me figure out exactly what to do when it’s time to change things up. I’ve listed them here, and I hope they can be useful on your fashion journey!
First things first, you should stock up on next season’s clothes. It might still be hot right now and the cold might seem far away, but it’s not. Fall is right around the corner, and when it comes, you’ll want to make sure that you’re prepared. You don’t have to go all-out, but picking up a few key pieces will help you get started, and along the way, you can pick up more things here and there. I typically start perusing & thrift shopping for new looks about a month and a half before the changing season, editing what I already have, trading in items that I want to donate, and that mindset truly puts me ahead of the curve.
During this stage, you should also be researching what you want your look to be. Think hard about the vibes, styles, colors, and patterns that you’re going for in the next season. This will ensure that your clothes will be cohesive in the next season and not just a random selection of garments. Once again, it doesn’t have to be completely thought out, but picking out key pieces that you absolutely love will do wonders.
In terms of wearing clothes, this is where you have to get strategic. The weather tends to fluctuate the closer you get to the changing of the seasons. Around late August, things tend to cool down, but they’re not so cool that you have to wear a heavy jacket. This is when I tend to implement contrasting pieces. For example, I’ll wear a long-sleeved blouse with shorts, or wide-leg pants with an embellished tank top. These “not-too-hot-not-too-cold” outfits are helpful and fashionable. And remember, you can always add layering pieces if necessary to adjust to the temperatures.
I also introduce the new pieces in my wardrobe slowly, and sometimes there’s a bit of a blend from the Summer style into Fall. It doesn’t immediately get cold because of a date on a calendar and you shouldn’t do away with those pieces so quickly. You can still wear skirts, mini-dresses, and sleeveless tops, all you have to do is make some adjustments that work for the new season. Wearing knee-high boots with skirts, or a duster with a cropped tee can make that transition look effortlessly cool.
