Behind The Design: The ‘Wicked’ Crochet Tapestry

I've been waiting for the Wicked movie to come out ever since it was announced, and I knew I had to do some inspired pieces for this special event. This magical story is a powerful one about two women torn apart by the whims of a dastardly wizard and the music is beyond phenomenal. Whenever I listen to the music I'm whisked away to Oz and I hope that my crochet designs do Wicked justice.

Glinda says, “Pink goes good with green,”, and she's actually right. The two are complementary color combinations that sit opposite each other on the color wheel. There's this sense of contrast yet togetherness that suits the theme of the movie so perfectly and that’s what I wanted to capture.

When I first crocheted the Wicked tapestry, I wanted to use pink and green split in half to represent this duality. The text is in black, and it really pops with the other two colors in the background. By the time Wicked Part 2 releases, I plan on turning the Wicked tapestry design into a blanket or throw, so look out for that.

For Glinda, I wanted to go with something softer and romantic. The crocheted top has a pink bow in the center, and I upcycled it into a Dream Duos design with llay material to turn into a dress. Then, I grabbed a wand, threw on a crown, and some pink slippers with a lacy bow, and the Glinda look came together!

For Elphaba, I crocheted a long-sleeved green sweater with keyholes along the neckline. I styled it with a black lace skirt, buckled black boots, and of course a witch hat to complete the look. I was ready to Defy Gravity. I wanted Elphaba to have a darker tone than Glinda’s look, and the green is very striking with all the black clothing I’m wearing.
