Top 5 Handmade Halloween Costumes for 2023
Halloween is one of my favorite times of year because I truly love dressing up (as if this website hasn’t made that clear). The themes and the props make it such a fun experience and it’s such a great way to show your appreciation for your favorite characters. The best part is that you can become anyone you want. You can be a hero, a villain, a horror icon, or just a fun character from one of our favorite shows or movies.
2023 was a great year in pop culture and there are loads of costumes to choose from. These are my top 5 Halloween costumes for 2023.
Barbie
Barbie was the biggest movie and rightfully so. The little doll is an icon and the work that director Greta Gerwig, actress Margot Robbie, and everyone else put into this story show. There were so many amazing outfits to replicate from the movie, the sporty Barbie on roller skates, Cowgirl Barbie with the white hat, or President Barbie with the presidential sash. You could also do Barbiecore and pull off your own Barbie look that’s inspired by the doll. Barbie can be anything and so can you.
Ariel
Another incredibly popular movie was The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey, which had under-the-sea adventure and on-land drama. Mermaidcore was big this year, and dressing up as Ariel could be a proper homage to the aquatic beauty. Grab some clamshells, use some metallics, and put on a red wig to pull off this look. However, I’d suggest using your voice if you go to a Halloween party.
Wednesday
Wednesday Addams might just be one of the top Queens of Halloween. She’s a character who seems built for this spooktacular occasion; she’s dark, brooding, and deadpan with a look that’s so fun to recreate. You can wear a black blouse with polka dots and a white collar underneath and black pants, or go for her academic look with a blazer and tie. And you have to rock her two pigtails and bangs if you're going to do his look. Snaps for Wednesday.
Rhaenyra
The Targaryens came back in a big way when House of the Dragon premiered last year and the impact is still being felt. The star of the show was Rhaenyra Targaryen, daughter, and heir to the King’s Landing throne and her royal looks made that evident. Gorgeous white and crimson dresses, gold jewelry, and intricate braided hairstyling make her a showstopper. Add a crown atop your head for added effect and people will be bending the knee.
Daisy Jones
Let the music and drama roll on in a Daisy Jones costume. Daisy Jones & the Six reminded us that the '70s is one of the best eras for fashion and the songstress offered a plethora of looks to recreate. She wore long overcoats with faux fur, wide sleeves, wrap tops, flare jeans, corduroys, high-waisted jeans, heeled boots, and cool floral designs that will make it seem like you've time-traveled to the past. Just make sure you don't fully commit to all the chaos that unfolded in that story.
