How to Find Your Creative Crochet Style
One of the best things about handmade style is that it’s fully customizable to your liking, but what do you do if you don’t know what your style is? Don’t worry, because there are a number of ways to discover it. I’m always tweaking my style and allowing it to evolve because that’s a natural part of the process. I’m never complacent with just sticking to the routine, because that’s how people get stuck and stop learning. I’m committed to pushing myself with new crochet patterns, fabrics, and methods to ensure that that doesn’t happen.
Here are a few ways you can find your creative crochet style.
First things first, it’s important to know the basics. You might be itching to create something truly unique, but crocheting properly will give you the freedom to try new things correctly. Have all of your supplies, try out several crochet patterns, and increase the level of difficulty for our projects. For example, after making a granny square, try a scarf, then gloves, then a sweater, etc. Once you know how to make basic forms, that’s when you can start experimenting.
Imitation is flattery. Choose one of your favorite designers and try to create what they’ve created. Pay attention to their style and work on getting good at their designs until it becomes more natural. From there, you can start to alter your designs. Stop and think about how you’d change it to put our stamp on it. Maybe it’s adding pockets or making a top short-sleeved or flutter-sleeved. The point is to make sure that it’s something you like because your opinion matters most.
I find inspiration outside the world of crochet. I love fashion in all its forms and I make a note of anyone who catches my eye. I might see an impressive collection in a magazine or a celebrity might have a cool style that I like. After that, I work on recreating those looks in my own way. Oftentimes, the looks are a starting point that inspires something similar and yet different. Perhaps it’s a color combination rather than remaking the whole garment, or something structurally interesting that I want to replicate. It’s a game of trial and error but at the end of it, I’ve come up with something I enjoy.
Inspiration can be found outside of clothes as well. You’d be surprised how many of my ideas come from something completely random. I’ll listen to a new song that just grabs me or watch a TV show with a certain mood and I’ll have this desire to make something based on a feeling rather than an exact form. Your style isn’t just one easily definable concept, it’s your personality, interests, and ideas, and ll of these things can be incorporated in your designs. The next time a song comes on that you really love, close your eyes and pay attention to the pictures that come into your head. You could find your next idea waiting for you within your own mind.
