The Inspiration Behind: The Reworked Denim Waistband Skirt

The reworked crochet denim waistband skirt was one of my more adventurous projects in recent memory. As many of you know, I've been experimenting with my Dream Crochet projects where I upcycle material. It's a lot of fun and allows me to approach crochet in a new way. I enjoy it when fashion and crochet intersect, and these Dream Duos projects are a reflection of that.

For this project, I looked at how I wanted to rework a denim skirt. I've upcycled skirts before and typically I add crochet along the hem and/or on the pockets, but for this one, I wanted to go somewhere unexplored. I started deconstructing the skirt in my mind by separating it into parts and I realized that I wanted crochet to have more of a presence. I looked at the waist and realized how accessible and stylish it would be for a crochet skirt to have a waistband and the idea was born.

Then I got to work. I removed the belt loops, cut off the denim waistband below the stitched hemline, did the measuring, then started crocheting. I chose this Comfy Cotton Blend Yarn because I had already made another Dream Duos shirt with it, and I thought the two would look good together. The denim and the rock band tee make sense together, and I like for my outfits to have continuity.

I really wasn't sure how it would all turn out until it was completed. I thought that I might have to go back to the drawing board or put it away if it went too far off-track, but I was happily surprised o find that it turned out how I had envisioned. The combination of soft and hard just worked out so well, and the colors contrasted in the best way possible, offering a unique look I haven't tried before.

The decision to go forward with this idea is a reminder that I should always attempt things that inspire me. There's a higher risk when it comes to venturing into the unknown, but the reward after having done something unique makes every moment worth it.
