6 Barbie-Inspired Looks for Summer 2023
Barbie is a fashion icon, so it was only natural for me to put together some handmade looks inspired by the movie. Ever since I learned that the ‘Barbie’ was coming out, I knew that I had to do something special for it and I think I created some pieces worthy of the Barbie name for The Dream Crochet Barbie Special. Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, and everyone in the cast and production did such an amazing job bringing the fashion icon doll to life and this is my ode to the pink revolution!
Fun and Fresh Barbie
2023 is the year of the longer skirt, but Barbie just works so well with the mini-skirt look. I crocheted this skirt and added lace around it for a tiered effect that elevates the mini skirt. Barbie's not stuck in the past, she's all about reinvention. I also threw on a graphic Barbie tee to give the outfit more casual vibes. You can change this up by pulling off the preppy look with a matching pink blazer and a basic tee would also work.
High Fashion Barbie
Barbie provides the perfect opportunity to go big, and I did that with this look. I thought of having a top with a bow on it...then I thought, why don't I make it the whole top? I crocheted the biggest bow I've ever made and attached it to this tube top and it just screams high-fashioned. I paired it with a simple pocketed skirt and a pink headband to top it off.
Fantasy Barbie
Everyone who knows me knows that I love romantic detailing, and I thought I'd blend that with my love of Barbie. I crocheted a light pink cinched halter top with a peephole and lace attached to one sleeve for a dash of fantasy. I paired it with pink shades and a matching long and flowing skirt to keep with the softness of the outfit and everything just came together perfectly.
Drama Barbie
I wanted something truly dramatic and that's what inspired this hot pink look. This is a very distinct silhouette for a halter top with fabric that hangs down from the neck, and the open stitching allows you to pair it with a complementary color. I paired it with a ruffled skirt for stylistic symmetry and it looks like these pieces were made for each other...because they were. Barbe isn't afraid of being a little dramatic.
Light and Breezy Barbie
On the opposite side is something more subdued but not any less impactful. I wanted to go for a lighter vibe so I made a light pink and white vertically striped apron dress with a bow that feels appropriately vintage. To update it, I added some lace underneath that gave it volume and flair and though it's not the loudest piece, it's still quite memorable.
Summer Beach Barbie
Barbie's beach looks are absolutely iconic, and I wanted to pay homage to them. I crocheted a multi-colored pink bralette and a matching high-low ruffled skirt that brings a little mermaid-core fashion into the mix. It evokes images of sand and Sun with the pop of colors and swimsuit aesthetics. The skirt can be replaced with a denim mini-skirt, or the top can be replaced by a long-sleeved halter. The possibilities are endless!
