Making the Side Stripe Granny Square Pants

The side stripe granny square pants were a new design concept that I really wanted to try. This was a Dream Duos upcycle using some thrift store jeans I needed to flip, and the invention arose from practicality first. The jeans were a bit too tight, but I really didn’t want to give up on them yet. I realized that they might look cool with some extra paneling, then I thought, why not make them granny squares?

I chose orange and creme for the colors, alternating them from inner to outer so it created a checker-like effect. I used 10 squares for each side and added a light blue border for a nice detail. The granny squares are mini versions with only 2 round and attached vertical strips aligning the pants.

I made them with worsted medium 4 yarn for durability I cut both sides of the pants to the waistband and added an extra denim belt loop [from a previous upcycle] for extra stability. Also, to accommodate the bigger waistband, but it wasn’t too much trouble. When all was said and done, it didn’t take all that long since I had done similar designs before.

I paired it with a matching granny square sleeveless top with the same orange and creme, only I added a light blue yarn to the many granny square, not just the border. Underneath that, I wore a short-sleeved blouse with the collar, sleeves, and bottom exposed. Layering is key.

I’m very happy with how everything turned out, and I’m glad to see the positive reception from so many people. I never fully know how these newer designs will go, so when it’s a success, it feels great!

I’ll definitely be doing this side strip granny square design again.
