Winter Fashion: Faux Fur Is In
I'll be the first to admit that I can get obsessed with a fashion idea, and right now, faux fur is certainly on that list. Winter is the perfect time for heightened textures are, sparkly and glittery tops, sheer, and velvet. Fashion can be a little more razzle-dazzle during the holidays, and faux fur can add so much to an outfit.
Faux fur looks great in so many different ways, whether it's a subtle touch to an accessory like purses or gloves, or a whole, big comfy blanket. I even made a video tutorial about how to create the faux fur crochet dress on YouTube.
In terms of practicality, it makes sense. It’s a warmer fabric, so it serves a purpose that’s more than just looking fabulous. I also think in our post-Barbie movie world, sensationalized fashion makes for a nice counterbalance to the ‘90s minimalism that’s in style right now. When it comes down to it, I just think it elevates whatever I’m wearing and makes it a moment.
Working with faux fur isn’t that difficult at all. I've never used as much faux fur yarn as I have this year and I feel like I've become rather proficient at it. It does have its difficulties, but it's nothing you can't overcome with diligence. When working with it, I mostly use larger needles as the yarn is more full and a looser gauge because of its texture. I don’t get too fancy with the crochet stitch and normally use something simple like the half-double crochet stich. The material speaks for itself, and seeing the detail of the stitch is difficult with so much volume.
One of my newer favorite creations is this faux fur mini skirt. The white looks so good and fluffy and makes me think of snow. I paired it with a faux fur bonnet hat (with extra-long straps for dramatic effect) and faux fur leg warmers. As I said, I'm kind of obsessed. And I did a style with me video for this to present some wearable outfits.
I pulled out an older blue faux fur skirt with a crocheted yarn waistband I made last year and made a matching faux fur handbag to go with it. I added a crochet sleeveless top with a faux fur collar and fingerless gloves for good measure. I love the movement of the skirt and the slit gives it that touch of modernity. The tonal blues are everything to me.
I’m still thinking up ways to incorporate faux fur into more crochet projects. This is all too exciting.
