Crochet & Street Style Clothing
One of the most frequent questions I get from those who haven’t yet joined the crochet community, is how to wear & style crochet clothing. From the outside looking in, it can really seem like such a difficult task to go from wearing one’s standard clothes to handmade/crochet clothes, but it’s honestly it’s not that big of a change.. These following pieces are adaptable and very much complement those who like to rock street style clothing.
First, let’s define street style. To put it simply, street style is your own personal style and how you put an outfit together. It’s how you interpret your clothing choices not purely based on the current fashion trends, but how you interpret your outfits based on preference. These can be trends that come from the people rather than the fashion studios and also runways.
Perhaps you like skinny jeans when the public seems to have shifted to looser cuts, or perhaps you like to over-accessorize even if fashion bloggers tell you not to. There’s nothing wrong with following fashion trends or incorporating them into what you wear, but there’s freedom in wearing clothes you love rather than depending on popular opinion.
That’s why crochet works so perfectly with street style clothes because it’s got built-in originality. For those starting to incorporate crochet into their street style, I advise starting small with accessories, like handmade bags and cozy hats. These options seem less committal and you can pair them with your street wear. After that, you can get a little more adventurous.
Layering pieces are truly the next best option. Cardigans and vests can be thrown over your outfit to make it work seamlessly. Sometimes, an outfit just needs a little boost and a layering piece can do wonders without making it look like a hassle. This works very well if your style is more vintage and classic.
With crocheted tops and bottoms, choose options that are most similar to your style. For example, if you love wearing green tees, perhaps you can choose green short-sleeved crocheted tops. You can build your outfit as you normally would, you just switch out the tee shirt for the crochet and the change won’t be so drastic. The same thing can be done for bottoms. If skirts are your jam, try a crocheted skirt that resembles the ones you own. From there, you can experiment with other garments, but this is a good starting point.
