An Era Of Upcycle

Hello there! So I have a confession to make, I'm quite obsessed with upcycling as well as, refashioning! For those who don't know the definition of upcycle, it's to reuse materials, such as denim, fabrics, and clothing, to create an original product. Upcycling opens up a whole world of possibilities that I'm excited to explore.

The newly collected denim selections from a recent thrift store haul.

There's something truly special about finding pieces & reimagining them to express your creativity & personality. It's like finding gold in unexpected places. I've even returned to some older pieces & evolved them into something unexpectedly inspiring. Nothing goes to waste and it really pushes me as a designer to use my imagination as well as, my craftsmanship.

A new design concept (coming soon) that I had been truly wanting to create.

Thrifting is truly a sport & it's great for upcycling opportunities. It also gives me an excuse to do more quality thrift store shopping. Sometimes I'll find an item that I like but isn't quite right. Instead of just letting it go and sending it down the metaphorical river of forgotten items, I imagine how it could be better and I challenge myself to bring the creation to life.

Current #wip (s) Cut up a pair of already damaged denim pants, & came out with 3 new concepts from the one piece.

Upcycling brings me back to when I first started on my crafting journey. Sewing came before crocheting for me, and this allows me to quite literally stitch two of my loves together. It's as if the sewing world & the crochet world are colliding and a new world that unites them both is coming into creation.

Some of the super early sewing & crochet makes, from over a decade ago!

I've already created some upcycling pieces you can check out on The Dream Crochet Instagram & the before/progress of the designs here on my @thedreamcrochet on TikTok. Some items I've upcycled include crochet dresses, denim shorts, and cotton tees, & I've got quite a ton of ideas to come. I'm just getting started!
