Behind the Design: The Met Gala Floral Two-Piece
I’ve envisioned making this special Dream Crochet two-piece set since I heard about the theme being "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion." It’s been such a busy time for me, but I really wanted to complete this project and share my love of clothes. Crochet is so versatile and this was the perfect opportunity to show that it can also be extravagant. My opinion changes on a daily basis, but this has to be one of my favorite projects ever.
I started with the colors and that’s what inspired everything else and I went with lavender and blush yarn color from “Heartland Yarn” from lionbrand.com. I upcycled a strapped corset with crochet and added flowers across the top in alternating colors, which sells that beautiful delicateness. I wanted the skirt should be as dramatic as possible as I made a long drawstring skirt that could over the hoop lace underskirt for that extra drama & volume.
After I finished those two main garments, it still didn't feel like enough (always love add ons!) So of course, I decided to do a little bit more. I made fingerless gloves with an open stitch that makes it edgier. Then, I used leftover cardboard from a shoe box-to fashion a handbag. I crocheted each side, added flowers with pearls in the center, and a pearled purse strap to match. Accessories can truly elevate a look and I believe that’s what happened here.
I had a little bit of extra time after the fingerless gloves and the purse, and I made a floral choker and crocheted earrings for good measure. When it comes to the Met Gala, you can never go too big.
I’ve created a Met Gala-inspired outfit these past few years, and this one is entirely my favorite. I loved the theme and as much as I love florals, I really want to be more thoughtful about how I use them, and this two-piece set truly came together.
This was a whole lot of fun and I can’t wait to do it again next year!
